Akshi Khandelwal Bhutani is the founder director & CEO of Butterfly Ayurveda. Apart from being an entrepreneur, she is a keen dance artist with over 16 years of training in Bharatnatyam, and has also trained in other contemporary styles of dances. She has been involved in martial arts ever since she was a child and at present is a student at the Damo Shaolin Kungfu School, where she trains in Qi gong, Tai Chi and Kungfu. Her interest in Ayurveda developed in 2012 while training in a performance art called ‘Subbody Butoh’ in Dharamsala. When she retuned to Delhi, she gathered a small team of an Ayurveda doctor & researcher and an analyst to set up the R & D department of Butterfly Ayurveda; the company was finally established on paper in 2014.
Akshi took to ayurveda instantly since it gave her a deeper understanding of her body and mind. She believes that self-knowledge is the greatest knowledge. She enjoys reading classical texts of ayurveda to increase her knowledge and understanding on the subject, and learns even more through her regular interaction with her R and D team.
Previously, she has completed her Masters in International and Development Economics from Yale University, USA in 2008. This program helped her to decide that development work was her calling. After returning to India she did internships with microfinance institutions like BASIX and then worked as a research analyst at Centre for Microfinance, IFMR for a period of 9 months, during this tenure she traveled across and lived in many rural areas across Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Orissa. It was during this stint that she realised that she needed to get back into dancing and left her job to pursue a full time course at Attakkalari Centre for movement arts and mixed media in 2010.
